My mom is a cosmetologist so she's always cut my hair, pierced my ears, colored my hair and most importantly, waxed my eyebrows. I have not once paid to get my eyebrows done. My mom's husband has been working in another state for a year or two, and my mom finally moved up there with him this summer. Needless to say, since ba ngaoi (grandma) is no longer a 20-minute drive away, me and the kids miss her like crazy.
Aside from that, suddenly my brother and I have had to resort to fending for ourselves in the area of cosmetic maintenance. His response? He shaved his head. But me, I don't have that option. So basically for the past 4 months, I've been looking like a hot mess. Though I can get by, I'm in need of a haircut. I'm considering trying to cut my own bangs. I did take cosmetology for two years in high school, but ultimately I decided it wasn't for me. And I have watched my mom all these years, although that probably means nothing.
What I REALLY need though is a good eyebrow shaping!! I have attempted to wax my own eyebrows a few times with moderate success. The problem is that not only am I broke, but it's hard for me to suddenly have to pay for these services when they were included in the benefits before!
I'm toying with a few options. What do you think?

Post a CommentThat's tough. I don't know what I'd do if my sister-in-law (cosmetologist) wasn't 1/2 hour away.
However, she used to wax my brows but I haven't had them done in a while. I pluck strays with my tweezers and they've actually been looking pretty good. I don't think they probably ever really needed waxing anyway. LOL! But I bet if you keep practicing on the brows you'll get really good at it.
But for the hair, I'd probably just use headbands or somehow make it work for now, that's because I am deadly afraid to put a scissors to mine.

Is this the same SIL who wore the flip flops at the wedding??
No, that was my BF's sister-in-law!

I'm not so much afraid of messing up my hair as I am of effin up my eyebrows. But getting better at it is good encouragement. Because I suppose even if I paid to get them done, I'd still have to get them done in another month or so.
I bought some BE brow powder and fill mine in a bit. Very helpful since I overpluck now and then! But I've gotten much better at it.

See, you probably already have a good natural shape to your brows. My husband is like that. His eyebrows are naturally perfect!! My mom always says my eyebrows are no good.

Aw I was hoping it would be that other sighing smiley.
I don't wax--the thought makes my eyes water. But, I'm an expert at plucking. You can do it! I have faith in you, girl1
Thanks Oh!! I think I can, I think I can..
I pluck my own.. but i'll occasionally go get them threaded.. for like 8 bucks at a salon.. i think it' about time for a reshaping though for me!
I do my own eyebrows, but it took me a while to get something good going on. When I first started, I tweezed waaaayyy to much off and so I had like these horrible 1 inch eyebrows. My suggestion is to tweeze 'em til you see your mom in December. It's about 1 month, so it's not too bad. Just don't go crazy... keep the shape in line, but don't get creative
Issa, my girlfriend gets hers threaded too. I might have to look into that.
Tiffa, I'm so going to beg my mom to wax me when she comes! I should point out that plucking will not be enough for my brows. Sadly. My natural shape is horrendous, so the entire process usually involves waxing, snipping and plucking.
books and shoes...DO NOT attempt to do your eyebrows yourself. like you, i have been unblessed with the most terrible eyebrows (i've been called vulcan) and need a professional to do them for me. try the threading but ask around for recommendations first. good luck
Do you get yours threaded too? What does that feel like?
I pluck mine too.. and I have for so long that I have very few come in. I would say do it yourself or splurge
So do you have to fill in with powder, kiwi? Mine are on the lighter side so I keep thinking I should try using powder but don't really know how to apply it.
threading initially hurts with a pulling motion. imagine a few tweezers coming at you at once and pulling at the same time. the hair gets caught in the thread somehow and gets yanked out. not that pleasurable but you get used to it. they also shape your brows with scissors if needed.
Yikes! Though I'm sure I can handle it. Shoot, I've been waxing and plucking all this time, why not lasso up the brows.
How long does it last, compared to waxing?
I just use a smaller angled brush and lightly feather in the brow powder. It makes a huge difference. Nobody ever taught me how, I just go right along the natural brow shape so it looks natural.

Thanks glam! I'm definitely going to have to try that. Maybe I should go with dark brown powder since mine are black? Do you think I could just use eye shadow?
I did first try it with eyeshadow but ran out of that shad of brown so then I bought the brow powder, which was only $10, so less expensive than shadow. If you have a dark brown shadow, I'd experiment with it.
